Music and the Brain

 

Join us for a fascinating blend of science and art as we explore how music affects the brain. This unique event features a talk and live piano recital by Dr Marianna Kapsetaki, including a captivating multimedia presentation where she will perform while a video displays the brain regions activated during piano playing. Discover the powerful connection between music and the mind through both words and sound.

Short bio:
Dr Marianna Kapsetaki is a neurosurgery resident, neuroscientist, lecturer, and concert pianist. She earned a Medical Degree (1st Hons), a MSc (Distinction) in Performing Arts Medicine from UCL, a PhD in Neuroscience from Imperial College London, followed by a postdoctoral researcher position at UCL where she was also a Guest Lecturer. She has received over 120 awards and scholarships across science and music, including 12 first prizes in international and national piano competitions, the UNESCO Medal, the 2025 Study UK Alumni Award by the British Council in Science & Sustainability, and in 2021 became the first Greek doctor listed in Forbes "30 Under 30" Europe. Marianna has been invited to give over 110 talks/presentations (e.g. Harvard University, University of Oxford, TEDx), and has supervised over 80 students. Her academic output includes over 20 publications (16 as first author), and editorial roles in multiple international scientific journals. As a concert pianist, she has performed over 160 times in major venues and recorded 3 CDs with her twin sister. She has been featured in the media over 100 times, including BBC News, The Guardian, and Classic FM.
